Copper and Aluminum
The transformation of materials into works of art can be considered an alchemical process. I take this to another level by chemically altering the surfaces and colors of metals using patina solutions. My love of play and experimentation is most engaged when working with metals and patinas.
Traditional patinas for copper are acid based. I can create the same rich colors in minutes that are caused by the elements of nature over time. Using different methods of application, there is a lot of experimentation involved and often pleasant surprises with the copper patinas. Oil paint is sometimes added to enhance the composition.
Patinas for aluminum are water based and more pastel. The color results are quite immediate, and I choose to apply them in a painterly fashion. The colors give luminosity and depth to a flat piece of metal, and I often develop this further with abrasion to the surface. Movement and light affect the colors and luminosity in a most beautiful way.
